Mother & Child Health Care Initiative (MCH)

Mother & Child Health Care Initiative (MCH) Donor: United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Partner: Rural Support Program Network (RSPN) Objective: The objective of the project was “To help reduce IMR & MMR in target communities through integrated community-based health interventions” with the purpose to: Develop a community channel for the dissemination of messages & supplies Educate the community on various preventive mother & child health care messages.Extending the outreach of the health department in non-served areas (immunization, TT vaccination & deworming)   Major Activities: Involved communities for polio eradication and immunization activities; Organized communities in non-LHW covered areas for Mother & Child Week twice a year; Conducted health education sessions for men and women in target areas about the importance of vaccination, Pregnant women were provided TT services and children in the age of 0-2 year were provided routine immunisation services children in the age of 2-5 years were provided deworming tablets with technical support of concerned health department. Ante-natal care, natal and post-natal care, use of clean delivery kit; danger signs during pregnancy, delivery, and post-delivery, birth spacing, hand washing, latrine use, newborn care, infant and young child feeding diarrhea and pneumonia, and use of iodized salt; Developed a community channel for the dissemination of messages and supplies. Family Advancement for Life and Health Project (FALAH)

Family Advancement for Life and Health Project (FALAH) Donor: United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Partner: Rural Support Program Network (RSPN) Major Activities: The FALAH project increased the use of family planning and birth spacing services by removing barriers and expanding knowledge to protect the health of women and children. Social Mobilization for the FALAH project; Conducted awareness and sensitization sessions with rural communities to promote birth spacing as an acceptable health intervention to protect the lives of women and infants. Conducted sessions with religious leaders Because the views and opinions of religious leaders and scholars are critical in shaping public opinion, FALAH sought to educate and inform them on the need for more effective family planning interventions to help mitigate perceived religious opposition. Dialogues conducted with community men & women; Adaptation of modern family planning methods and referrals; Contribution to the development of the annual implementation plan; Identification and orientation of Men & Women Community Facilitators /Activists; Group formation and sensitization of married men & women of reproductive age. Combating Rising Food Prices in Pakistan Donor: The European Union Partner: World Food Program (WFP) & Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Major Activities: Combating rising food prices in Pakistan – Addressing the negative impact of rising food prices on food insecure and vulnerable households in Pakistan; To provide services for the identification of targeted beneficiaries and distribution of food to them by engaging them in food for work (FFW) activities in the selected Union Councils of district Sukkur and Khairpur of Sindh Province; Agri-Inputs (Bag of Urea, DAP and Wheat Seed); Vegetable Seeds (Spinach, Turnip, Tomato and Pease); Provisions of Lentils; Training of beneficiaries on balanced use of fertilizer, sowing methods, etc. Formation of Farmer’s Associations (FA’s); Establishment of Machinery Pool Group (MPG); Reconstructions of water channel and water harvesting structures; Land Leveling of beneficiaries land; Training of beneficiaries on post-harvesting losses of Wheat crops; Monitoring of distributions; Program impact assessment. Crop Maximization Project (CMP-II) Donor: Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (MINFAL) Partner: Rural Support Program Network (RSPN) Major Activities: The Special Program for Food Security and Productivity Enhancement of Small Farmers (Crop Maximisation Project-II or CMP-II) was a five-year, project of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock. Formation of Farmers Associations; Federated Farmers Associations into Village Organizations (VOs); Capacity Building of FA office bearers and VO office bearers; Developed Village Development Plans; Mobilized and Trained Women Farmers. The FAs and VOs received technical guidance, training and support in input and product sale and marketing from the Agriculture Line Departments and private service providers engaged by the CMP-II Back

Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) Waseela-e-Haq Scheme

Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) Waseela-e-Haq Scheme Donor: Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) Districts: (Ghotki). Major Activities: Benazir Income Support Program is the main social safety net mechanism established by the Government of Pakistan (GOP) to contribute to the alleviation of poverty. Waseela-e-Haq was started as one of the BISP initiatives formulated with the mission of “breaking the vicious cycle of poverty through micro loans”. Under this scheme, female beneficiaries from the most marginalized segment of society are selected through a computerized prize, to receive a loan of up to Rs. 300,000 for setting up an enterprise to improve their livelihood. This microloan to the targeted beneficiaries is to be used only for establishing mutually identified businesses. Keeping in view the need to provide those beneficiaries or their nominees, basic entrepreneurial training was started as one of its mandatory components. In partnership with PPAF, SRSO imparted enterprise development training to the said project beneficiaries before the provision of loans. A 10-day Enterprise Development Training program was developed by ECI and PPAF, with six days dedicated to business training and four days focusing on skill enhancement. Back

Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) Poverty Targeting Survey

Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) Poverty Targeting Survey Donor: Benazir Income Support Program (Government of Pakistan) Partner: Rural Support Program Network (RSPN) Districts: (Naushehro-Feroze), (Khairpur), (Sukkur), (Shikarpur), (Jacobabad), (Kashmore-Kandhkot), (Shahdadkot), (Larkana) and (Karachi). Major Activities: The government of Pakistan launched the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) as one of the main social safety net programmes in 2009. The main objective of the programme is to support the poor and vulnerable against the negative effects of food crisis and inflation. The government in its pilot phase adopted a “Targeting Process” through the Poverty Score Card Roll-out survey. Based on the successful completion and learning of the test phase in 2009, the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has launched the “National Poverty Targeting Survey”. The poverty scorecard survey consists of 13 questionnaires which are weighted for their answers and 16.17 is the weighted total used by the BISP as a cut-off score with this BISP uses a scientific instrument for covering every household to target the poorest household. In this regard, RSPN on behalf of RSPs formed a partnership with BISP for surveying in three provinces of Pakistan. RSPs are one of the key stakeholders in poverty alleviation in Pakistan. Poverty targeting is in line with RSP objectives. Through the RSPN partnership, the SRSO was to survey the targeted Cluster-C Sindh, which includes (sub-cluster Karachi and sub-cluster Sukkur), in districts Naushehro-Feroze, Khairpur, Sukkur, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Kashmore-Kandhkot, Shahdadkot, Larkana and Karachi. Scaling up Rural Sanitation in Flood Affected & High Polio Risk Districts (RuSFAD Phase I & II)

Scaling up Rural Sanitation in Flood Affected & High Polio Risk Districts (RuSFAD Phase I & II) Donor: Plan International Duration: Phase I : June 2011 to May-2012 Phase II: Oct-2011 to Oct-2012   Major Activities Community mobilization focusing especially on school Children; Defecation trenches; Sanitation facilities; Hand washing facilities through the provision of materials and cash incentives; The RuSFAD project highly focused and invested in a capacity-building program through which SRSO covered 2,000 villages with physical target achievement of the Capacity building of Community stakeholders through the Training of Community Resource Persons. Teachers were trained on PATS followed by training Masons trained for alternative low-cost sanitation options with the linkage of trained entrepreneurs/sanitation marts funded for community facilitation; Demo Latrines are Constructed, WASH facilities are provided to Schools & 43 Villages of Latrine, and Drinking Water & Sanitation facilities; Hygiene Messages were conveyed through IEC material, Interactive Theatres & Print/electronic media; Distribution of Hygiene kits among school Children with the immediate result of adopting Hand washing & water boiling practices. The construction of 83,808 new latrines/CLTS by the community itself & declaration of 1,775 Villages Certified as Open Defecation Free (ODF) are the remarkable achievements of the project. The Plan International introduced new approach to bioremediation solutions through NBS with the construction of 2 wetlands for the treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater to bring water quality parameters under the limits of National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS). The reclaimed water can be used for agricultural purposes or discharged into rivers and water bodies without disturbing the aquatic ecosystem. These wetlands were constructed in Ghotki and Khairpur Districts. Back
