Empowering local stakeholders and communities

Intro: Floods devastated Pakistan’s Sindh province in 2022, causing devastation in the Mirpurkhas district in particular. Floods caused widespread relocation, house losses, infrastructure destruction, and livelihood damage, particularly in agricultural and low-income regions. Empowering local stakeholders and communities for diverse and sustainable livelihoods, as well as protecting vulnerable populations from climate threats in Sindh Province’s Mirpurkhas district, intends to meet the urgent needs of afflicted communities in the aftermath of the 2022 floods. The project focuses on reconstructing critical infrastructure and creating resilient communities with long-term livelihood options to ensure the community’s ability to recover and thrive sustainably. The project also attempted to restore livelihoods, particularly for individuals who lost agricultural land and livestock, and to assist communities build resilience.

Duration: 01.05.2024 – 30.04.2027 (36 months)

Target Group/s:

Direct target groups: 407 people (204 women/203 men) are supported in setting up their own business through benefits in kind, training, coaching, and mentoring. Out of these at least 30 families with an average of 6 family members, i.e. 180 individuals, will benefit from small investments in climate-smart agriculture.

Indirect target groups: A total of 7,869 rural families with 43,164 people (22,445 women and 20,719 men) will benefit from the infrastructure measures (i.e., small connecting roads and small irrigation channels, but also water pumps, etc.) and will have better access to health, education, and market facilities.

Covering Districts/s: Mirpur Khas (Union Councils: Ahori, Bakhur Roshanabad, Mir Allah Bachayo, and Khuda Bux 2)

Overall Project Objective:

Increase the resilience of communities affected by the 2022 floods in Jhuddo Tehsil, Sindh, Pakistan, by improving disaster preparedness, promoting sustainable livelihoods, and empowering women.

Specific Project Objective and Activities:

Sub goal 1: The target population in 67 villages uses and maintains restored basic social and productive infrastructure that can withstand natural disasters and cl

 

  1. Training of government officials and LSO members in participatory learning and action (PLA)
  2. Participatory evaluation and preparation of small-scale rehabilitation projects
  3. Implementation of smaller rehabilitation projects

Sub-goal 2: Communities and local authorities learn to integrate disaster risk reduction and disaster prevention into annual local development planning.

  1. 20 female trainers for disaster risk management (Community-Based Disaster Risk Management – CBDRM
  2. Training of Local Support Organizations (LSO) and Village Organizations (VO)

  3. Strengthen the DRR governance system through training, coordination, and lobbying (Training government officials to integrate disaster risk reduction into the local development planning process).

Sub-goal 3: Beneficiaries have access to and use various climate-friendly livelihoods and alternative ways of generating income.

  1. Market and marketing analyses for the evaluation of alternative livelihoods.
  2. Training (ToT) of intermediaries/ LSO members in Get Ahead (gender and entrepreneurship).
  3. “Get Ahead” basic and follow-up training for members of village organizations (VO).
  4. Planning and implementation of small projects to secure livelihoods and create alternative sources of income.
